Using portraiture as my medium I explore the idea modern trope that it is the colour of our skin that defines who we are. Using a Renaissance technique known as “dead colours” these portraits enable us to look beyond skin colour and ethnicity. Taking reference from the Renaissance religious paintings and the incomparable Michelangelo’s Pieta’s, Pieta 2018 shows a mother mourning the senseless death of her son. She is dressed in a vibrant green dress while her son lies dead in her arms and to reinforce this narrative I have used the “dead colours” technique. Although this work takes its reference from the past it represents a very modern problem.
